Yoga Nutrition Sustainable, Spine Mobility Improves

Bob Crowther (66) - 124.0 pounds this morning - outlines an approach used to maintain his weight (123 - 125) over the past 30 days while enhancing spinal, back muscle & connective tissue mobility.
Achieving A Nutrition Goal

July 28, 2017 was notable: my weight was reduced to 125.0 pounds.

A long sought yet short term goal was achieved by significantly modifying habits and behaviors established over many years.

Acquiring nutritious ingredients and preparing small meals at home were most responsible for this positive health outcome.
An August Morning Meal

Mixed Fresh Fruits

Grapes
 Blueberries, Raspberries, Cut Strawberry
Slices Of Kiwi, Mango
A Single Cherry, One Medjool Date

  With
A Teaspoon of Nuts, Seeds, Granola
Menu items listed at most local area cafes and restaurants simply did not offer selections with the quality nutrient sources I deemed appropriate, without having excessive levels of salt, sugar and fat.

Most mornings during this past month I consumed mixed greens and, or home grown kale with several fresh, dried fruits and one or more vegetables - always with the addition of one or two teaspoons of a mix of chia, flax and sunflower seeds with pignolia nuts and a granola mix.

On those days when participating in one-on-one yoga sessions, I ate sparingly from a mixture of nuts, seeds and dried fruits (usually raisins, cranberries, blueberries, tart cherries).

I was conscious of and careful not to consume a large volume of food at any one meal - selecting the same small dish for each home meal to limit food quantity and acknowledging 'less was more'.

Purchasing small quantities of various plant food sources occurred almost daily to maintain their freshness, to avoid spoilage (especially of mixed greens).

A single apple or kiwi would last four - five days: small portions of each being added to a morning or an afternoon meal.

New plant sources of nutrients were enjoyed together: including the combination quinoa seeds and lentils (a teaspoon of each).

Fresh green beans and locally grown slices of green pepper were often added to small pieces of broccoli and, or cauliflower.

My only seafood eaten this past month was a modest piece of grilled salmon while visiting with friends.
One August Afternoon Meal

Includes
Lentils & Quinoa
Green Pepper, Cauliflower Pieces
Fresh Blackberries, One Cherry
Dried Blueberries
Chia, Flax and Sunflower Seeds
Pignolia Nuts
Blueberry Lavender Granola
Olive Oil
On several days in the past two weeks I have enjoyed eating small portions of mixed frozen vegetables: broccoli, carrots, onions, red peppers, water chestnuts, mushrooms and celery with my lentils, quinoa among other items.

Mixed Greens

Blackberries, Raspberries, A Cherry
Raw Cut Green Beans
Sunflower Seeds
Olive Oil
I have continued to travel to three primary local business venues for specific products contributing to my daily nutrients.

Isador's Organics (Main Street, Oxford, MA)

Among other selections, three new 16 ounce cold drinks from Isador's Organics served as a refreshing alternative to my usual meal:

[1] Strawberry Tremolo Smoothie [combining strawberry, almond milk, banana, hemp protein, vanilla, cardamon, cinnamon]

[2] Teatime Smoothie [a mixture of matcha, green apple, spinach, banana, filtered water, spearmint]

[3] Charcoal Smoothie [cucumber, celery, banana, kale, lemon, lime, charcoal]

Panera Bread (Webster, MA)

One some days I purchased either a small hot coffee or cold bottle of mineral water alone or along with an item listed below:

> A half portion of salad without dressing containing romaine, strawberry, fresh blueberries, mandarin orange, pineapple, toasted pecans and grilled chicken - the several small portions of chicken were the only meat i ate all month

> A cold smoothie [peach - strawberry with almond milk]

> Small cup of fresh fruits [blueberries with slices of strawberry, pineapple and cantaloupe]

Arcade Snacks (Southbridge Street, Auburn, MA)

Arcade Snacks has remained a highly valued, primary source of diverse quality nuts, seeds, dried fruits and granola.

I consumed these plant products daily - often with both morning and afternoon meals or as snacks between them.

Most of the early evening nutrients I ate were mixtures of nuts alone or with some fresh, dried fruits with water.

One long term nutrition objective of mine is to sustain this current narrow weight range throughout 2017 and for my more senior, geriatric years.

The positive health benefits, weight outcomes I have experienced during the past 30 days serves as empirical evidence my approach remains reasonable, achievable.

Enjoying A More Supple Spine, Back

It was my severely restricted spinal, lower back mobility among other factors that initially led me to Ray Hoyt, The Yoga Loft.

Now approaching eight years, Ray has enhanced my health, wellness in three separate yet related roles during our valued association:

[1] As an instructor, mentor of hatha yoga [Iyengar tradition]

[2] Via his Tui Na Bodywork (see www.raytuina.com)

[3] Serving as a valuable source of information on nutrition

Whole body non-impact movements in group yoga classes and initially monthly massages along with my home yoga practice slowly began to address:

  • limited spinal, back muscles range of motion attempting to move backwards
  • compromised breathing while attempting these movements

Pronounced mobility progress of my spine & back muscles/connective tissues were significantly enhanced via one-on-one morning partner yoga sessions with Patty Tremblay, one of my three talented yoga instructors, that began in May, 2013 and continues to this day.

As my nutrition choices resulted in a gradual loss of weight, my mobility was facilitated.

I was able to enter and maintain more challenging postures with and without props for longer duration, with controlled breathing.

My last blog highlighted recent spinal, muscle forward mobility in a variation of malasana: the ability to have both feet and head on my mat at the same time.

During the past two months, the increased range of motion involving forward spinal mobility has also been experienced moving my spine backwards.

Placement of a block at different heights along my entire spine, from cervical and thoracic to lumbar and sacral positions has gradually led to an enhanced spinal curvature, back muscles range of motion shown below with both knees and head on the rug simultaneously.

Safe Enhancement Of Spinal Mobility
It was in my home yoga studio, initially sitting in virasana and leaning backwards on my forearms with knees together and insteps of both feet flat, that i devoted more time to address my restricted mobility backwards.

Positioning a yoga block along my spine at different heights and locations over months - frequently holding positions up to 15 minutes - led to gradual experiences of improved backward range of motions.

Now at my lowest weights since starting yoga activities, I noted a more pronounced curvature to my spine not possible previously.

With this improving spinal mobility I further evaluated my ability to execute an asana known as Upper Facing Bow  - for years a challenging, restricted movement for me.

It was during April, 2016, that I ceased doing this asana in my one-on-one partner sessions to avoid the frequent pelvic area, bilateral numbness extending to my feet and the risk of potential sciatic nerve(s) damage.

This posture begins from a supine position: lying on ones back, knees up, feet flat & facing forward, with hands reversed near the head and lifting the body upwards.

It was exciting being able to enter Upper Facing Bow recently - to raise my body, arch my spine and back with controlled breathing  - without any numbness, physical discomfort or pain.

Pursuing A Viable Template

I anticipate the successful approaches, experiences during 2016, 2017 I have shared with others to date, especially these past thirty days, will inform and guide my future nutrition choices, yoga activities.

Your reactions to my comments are welcomed.

Yoga Nutrition Update, Commentary

Bob Crowther (66) - 125.0 pounds today - highlights examples of his daily nutrition choices leading to a weight experienced as a teenager.

Eating high quality nutrients to reach and maintain a weight fifty years ago has become a lifestyle priority complementing my daily yoga practice.

Since my last blog post in April, I have been proactive and continued to search for diverse plant food sources to be eaten in small amounts each day to reach well defined objectives.

The same disciplined and focused approach to my yoga practice for the past 7 years, 9 months was extended to making informed nutrition choices.

It has been fun selecting from a variety of raw nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits and selective organic, some vegan granola mixtures.

The addition of virgin olive oil and various herbs, flavorings have further enhanced my meals while providing significant health benefits.

On most days I have two modest meals: one in the early morning, the other during the afternoon hours.

On some occasions, what I consume is obtained in a semi-liquid form.

Earlier today i enjoyed a nutritious 'Libation Smoothie' from Isador's Organics on Main Street in Oxford, MA - a refreshing mixture of: strawberry, blueberry, soy ice cream, coconut oil, dates, chia seeds and almond milk.

Most meals are designed so I can eat with my fingers and are always accompanied by water (hot, cold), black coffee with no additives or different basic, herbal teas with and without caffeine.

My morning meal from several days ago is shown below and was enjoyed with a cup of coffee and many additional cups of hot water.

Mixed Greens include kale, spinach, arugula, romaine & chard types, collard, mustard greens, chicory, beet greens, red & green oak, tatsoi and mizuna along with different herbs: parsley and dill among others.

Raw Vegetables are favorites and include broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beans, peas in pods among others.

Fresh Fruits i have enjoyed are blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, pineapple, mango, kiwi, medjool dates, cherries, cranberries, cantaloupe, various melons and watermelon.

Dried Fruits eaten daily are raisins, cranberries and blueberries - I avoid fruits treated with sulphur dioxide.

Mixed Nuts consumed, all raw or roasted and unsalted, include: almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, pignolia nuts, peanuts and hazel nuts - all available at Arcade Snacks on Southbrige Street in Auburn, MA.

Seeds from Arcade Snacks providing daily nutritional value include chia, flax and sunflower and on occasions, pumpkin.

Two Granola blends are currently eaten: an Organic Maple (in part containing whole rolled oats, crisp brown rice, sunflower seeds, maple syrup, salts, some flavors) from Arcade Snacks and a vegan Lavender Blueberry (gluten free oats, silvered raw almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dried blueberries, maple syrup, olive oil, sea salt and cardamon among others) from the Booklovers Gourmet in Webster, MA.

My afternoon nutrition is similar to the morning with some notable additions: a teaspoon of soaked lentils, a few pieces of  broccoli or cauliflower or some other vegetable selection.

I do not have a dinner in any conventional sense.

A small piece of ginger, several pistachios, macadamia nuts or hazel nuts along with some greens, vegetables (pieces of broccoli, cauliflower, pea pods and carrots or some fresh, dried fruits with water serve as 'dinner'.

On two recent social occasions at public establishments i avoided the high levels of salt, sugar and fat of processed foods.

This was accomplished by bringing, eating a mix of my nuts, seeds from home and having pieces of fresh fruit with water at one location and having a cup of an excellent vegan gazpacho along with my nuts, seeds and a ginger lemon tea with no caffeine at another site.

The addition of small bits of chocolate at times provides a welcome flavor to many of my various mixes of greens, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruits and granola.

I have used my body's response to inform what foods i can eat without experiencing discomfort and, or possibly inflammatory reactions.

From my years of reading, researching different nutritional claims, i have become skeptical of many diverse government, medical and clinical sources about what to eat, avoid because of a myriad of cited concerns.

My gastro-intestinal tract and its associated microbiome (flora including bacteria) and skin are seemly healthy at this time - these various organs and microbes will let me know if my nutrition choices need to be modified.

My desire to maintain the lean, strong and flexible body type i now enjoy (ecto-mesomorph) has resulted in another positive outcome: it has enhanced my whole body yoga mobility, balance and improved my breathing, mindfullness.

I recently ceased attending my four group yoga classes for the Summer in part to emphasize my home yoga activities.

For several years my living room has served as a home yoga studio and continues to be used daily.

At home [1] more time can be devoted to longer held postures, sequences of movements not possible in a large class and [2] I can customize & experiment with asana selections, movement variations and sequences to address my specific mobility limitations, strengths.

My home practice is still complemented by weekly one-on-one partner sessions with an instructor at Ray Hoyt's studio,The Yoga Loft, in Dudley, MA.

It is my intent to talk about the diverse whole body movements practiced during my morning sessions in a future blog.

Recognizing I have always moved best at my lightest weight, it has been especially satisfying being able to devote more time to address restricted areas of mobility including my lower back, associated pelvic girdle muscles and connective tissues at home.

A recent exciting, significant example of my mobility progress over the past year was experienced with a variation of the asana known as Malasana and was achieved recently on July 19th - the start of my 81st month of yoga activities.

For the first time ever, i was able to move my torso, head forwards from a deep squatting position to touch the floor keeping my feet flat - a movement not possible when the image below was taken over a year ago and soon after first attempting this (for me) challenging posture.

It took me approximately four minutes, thirty seconds to accomplish a long sought goal to open muscles associated with spinal, pelvic areas.

This enhanced range of motion demonstrates an individuals mobility is not beyond the realm of possibilities for a senior of my age, beyond.

Other examples of my home yoga practice progress with be the subject of future postings.

My ongoing focus on making both yoga and nutrition important lifestyle priorities has continued to provide invaluable physical and mental health benefits.

I smile thinking about a fortuitous encounter many years ago with Ray Hoyt.

Ray became, remains a valued yoga instructor and has most influenced me to make better nutrition choices, focus on my whole body mobility.

I remain grateful for his contributions to my quality of life.

Yoga, Nutrition, Weight Loss Promotes Health

Bob Crowther (66) highlights how his yoga activities and nutrition choices during the past twelve months led to significant, positive outcomes from his annual physical, lab tests several weeks ago.

I reduced known health risk factors often associatd with a metabolic syndrome diagnosis though focused, disciplined behavioral changes without using any prescribed medications or supplements including vitamins.
Insights From Actions
> Daily Yoga, Better Nutrition Can Improve Health
> Health Further Enhanced By Reducing Weight

My recent April 3, 2017, annual physical and blood, urine assays indicated I had lowered blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglycerides.

Among other positive results, I also improved both HDL and LDL values and blood sugar levels.

Weight Loss To 126 Pounds - Reduced To High School Levels
A Positive Outcome Through Yoga, Nutrition Focus
My Approach
My yoga activities became a substitute for medical insurance for almost five years after my loss of employment as Morphologist from The Shriners Hospitals for Children, Boston, approaching 60.

Medicare eligibility at 65 provided basic insurance coverage and led to an association with Dr. Jarrod Faucher, a Geriatric Specialist - my primary care physician.

Baseline values obtained from an April, 2016, physical and lab tests were both instructive and motivating - a recognition that improvements were possible by changing lifestyle choices.

I decided to modify not only what i ate but the quality and quantity of diverse foods in a disciplined manner with the goal of altering as many risk factors as possible.

Seeking out different nutrients and evaluating how i responded to them became a year long period of discovery that continues to evolve.

No Substitute For Informed Nutrition Choices
Nutrient rich plants became my main source of proteins, carbohydrates and fats required to maintain biological functions, my relatively healthy and lean body.

Daily water consumption was increased significantly and always included with each meal - two notable consequences of this additional hydration were an enhanced yoga mobility and less dry skin.

Recently, i began to add small amounts of local honey varieties from Hebert Honey to hot water providing flavor.

Discovering where to purchase many of my plant foods was solved in the town where I reside.

Arcade Snacks, My Primary Source Of Nutrients
I was first introduced to Arcade Snacks, a local business in Auburn, MA, at 205 Southbridge Street [ www.arcadesnacks.com , 508-832-6300 ] by a friend circa 2013 and have become a frequent patron: enjoying its excellent, friendly staff and diverse high quality products.

Over 90% of the plant nutrients i ate during each day were purchased at this facility in the form of nuts, seeds and dried fruits among other items - examples of these products are shown below:

Two Books Worth Reading Re: Nutrition

> Food Rules  An Eater's Manual by Michael Pollan (2009): Eat real food, mostly plants, in small amounts

> Salt, Sugar, Fat How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss (2013): 'Bliss' levels of salt, sugar, fat have been added to our foods at addictive levels based on biological research by food company scientists and have contributed to an alarming incidence of obesity, diabetes and other health risk factors among all age groups

Moving Forward, Several Goals:

  • To maintain my weight within a narrow range that permits whole body yoga mobility - at, near high school levels (i move better when i weigh the least)
  • To increase the types of foods i consume beyond plants and to incorporate select dairy, fish and lean meat sources in small quantities limited to several times each month
  • To become better informed about the microbiome, ongoing research and the importance of bacteria species, their anti-inflammatory and epigenetic roles contributing to our health
A special acknowledgment to Ray Hoyt, my yoga instructor - as of today, for seven year, six months - for sharing his yoga and nutrition experiences and contributing in a major way to my current health, wellness through his actions and words.
